Shallenberger Nature Preserve

Shallenberger State Nature Preserve

Shallenberger is located off of Becks Knob Road in Hocking Township, 4 miles from Lancaster. Drive SW on US 22, continue 1/4 mile going N on Becks Knob Road. A parking lot is provided at the site. Beck's Knob is a sandstone feature.

Cranberry Bog on Buckeye Lake, Ohio

Cranberry Bog floats on Buckeye Lake which was once a swamp that was turned into a reservoir to feed the Ohio and Erie Canal system. The plan however didn't work because the new lake was too shallow to feed the canal for barge traffic especially during the dry season.

The three mile long trail contains two separate loops of moderate difficulty due to steepness of terrain. No other visitor facilities are present.

This 415 acre preserve features Appalachian type plant communities, a deep stream valley and a prominent Black Hand Sandstone overlook. Chestnut oak and mountain laurel grace the ridge tops while tulip tree and sycamore inhabit the valley floor. Jacob's Ladder is a spectacular example of the Black Hand Sandstone, towering some 300 feet above the stream below. The sheer wall itself is nearly 100 feet high and exhibits the honeycombed weathering so common to this bedrock. Once on top, you are looking south towards the Clearcreek Valley.

This fascinating natural area is situated in southern Fairfield County, five miles southeast of Lancaster. This region has been known by naturalists for its biological diversity for many years. Dedicated in April of 1996, Rhododendron Cove is significant for having the highest concentration in Ohio of the native great rhododendrons, a state endangered species

Rhododendron Cove State Nature Preserve is a very special place. Connected to the nearby road only by a narrow easement means that parking and access is very limited. To minimize the impact on the preserve and yet provide access to the general public to enjoy this natural area, visitation is permitted by written access permit from the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, 1889 Fountain Sq. Wahkeena is located on the southeastern boundary of glaciation in Ohio where it hosts an abundance of plants and animals typical of the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau, as well as some glacial relicts. The existence of this serene haven is a tribute to the efforts of one woman, Carmen Warner who fell in love with this corner of rural Fairfield County.

Wahkenna is located on Pump Station Road one mile west of Old Logan Road, six miles south of Lancaster in Sugar Grove, off of U.S. Route 33 in Fairfield County, Ohio. It is now a part of the Fairfield County Historical Parks.

Walter A Tucker Nature Preserve, Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068, 43068 accessible via State Rte 256 & Stonetrail Way (0.5 mi) is part of Blacklick Woods Metro Park.
