Millersport, Ohio -- Ohio Erie Canal System ... The Deep Cut
The town of Millersport prospered because of the Ohio-Erie Canal system in the area.
In the late 1820's, "The Deep Cut" was made S-SW of the Licking Reservoir now Buckeye Lake. Because the topography in the area contained rolling hills and a higher elevation than the rest of the Licking Summit, it was decided that excavation (a Deep Cut) was the best way to maintain the water level to the south.
This excavated area became known as "The Deep Cut". It was 1 7/8 miles long from NW of Millersport to the south end of Pugh's Lock. This area was one of the most difficult evacation problems encountered in the development of the Ohio-Erie Canal system in Ohio. The canal ditch "The Deep Cut" remains along Deep Cut Road and runs into Buckeye Lake at Millersport.
